Coming of Age
One of the biggest journeys we undergo in our life is growing up. The transition from childhood to adulthood is a major experience of what shapes the individual. The first kiss, experiencing sexuality and heartbreaks are events we remember for the rest of our lives. Highs and lows define the experience of this unique journey.
In modern pop culture, no medium has covered the subject of growing up as co- herently as movies do. Although everyone has their individual story we relate through the instruments used in these films like the characters, music and symbols. The similarities in-between these movies show, that teenagers experience the same episodes no matter what decade they live in.
I analysed the single stages of growing up pictured in these movies by looking at the compositions, colours and shapes used in the key scenes. By overlaying single movie frames I created abstract images that picture the emotional depth of the events the characters experience. As monologues and dialogues function as an essential part of the story lines, a single quote from each movie underlines the message of the composed images.
The movies I covered in my work are Almost Famous, The Breakfast Club, Into the Wild, Juno, Kids, Moonrise Kingdom, My Girl, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Stand By Me, Submarine and The Virgin Suicides.
